1 "Naniwa-bushi" or "Roukyoku" is a type of popular entertainment that peaked in popularity in the first half of the 20th century. It's a style of narrative singing, usually accompanied by shamisen, that tells stories focused on duty and humanity. Since many naniwa-bushi stories are sad, it can be used to mean a "sob story", as it does here. "Naniwa" is an old name for Osaka, where the style originated at the end of the Edo period. |
