Indigo Squared 藍二乗1 3/21
| English | Romaji |
|---|---|
Unchanging scenery, the shallow afternoon |
Kawaranai fuukei, asai shougo |
| Beneath the overpass, indigo squared, sprawled on the ground | Kouka-shita, ai nijou, nekorobu mama |
| A single pair of hands applauds for my single blank page of a life | Hakushi no jinsei ni hakushu no ne ga hitotsu natteiru |
| I've spent another day singing out my empty self | Karappo na jibun wo kyou mo utatteita |
To keep you from changing |
Kawaranai you ni |
| I write a storyline with you as the lead role, here in my notebook | Kimi ga shuyaku no PUROTTO wo kaku NO-TO no naka |
| The cut-off gas and water | Tomatta GASU, suidou |
| The world and the news are others' problems, anyways | Seken mo NYU-SU mo shosen taningoto |
| Even my own life - see here? - it's like ink | Kono jinsei sae, hora, INKU mitai da |
The dreams I always sketched out in my head back then |
Ano koro zutto atama ni kaita yume mo |
| Even they have grown up now - they're going to expire | Otona ni naru hodo jikou ni natteiku |
Although, although I only look up at the clouds |
Tada, tada kumo wo miagetemo |
| Everything that I see blurs and runs again | Shikai ha kyou mo nagareru mama |
| In the distant night I see above me, flowers swim | Tooku aoida yoru ni hana oyogu |
| Enough to mistake them for springtime | Haru to mimagau hodo ni |
| It's like I'm just losing sight of you | Kimi wo tada miushinau you ni |
A life spent looking down to keep from falling |
Korobanai you ni shita wo muita |
| Is a life made of nothing but compromises | Jinsei ha dou ni mo dakyou de dekiteru |
| I don't believe in souls or destiny or love songs or life itself | Kokoro mo unmei mo RABUSONGU mo jinsei mo shinjinai |
| In the end, if it won't sell well, it's all a waste | Shosen urenai nara zenbu ga muda da |
With the dreams I had spilled, I sketched out this moment; I lie within it and wait for the expiration date to come |
Waza to koboshita yume de egaita ima ni nesobetta mama de jikou wo matteiru |
Only, only looking at the image of you |
Tada, tada mabuta no uragawa |
| Distant, drawn on the inside of my eyelids | Tooku egaku kimi wo mita mama |
| In my notes, in pale corners of the night2, flowers swim | NO-TO, usui yasumi ni hana oyogu |
| And in my eyes is yet another | Boku no me ni mata hitotsu |
Life is a series of compromises. |
Jinsei ha dakyou no renzoku na n da |
| I already knew that a long time ago. | Sonna koto touni wakatteta n da |
| Elma - it's you. | ERUMA, kimi na n da yo |
| You alone are my music. | Kimi dake ga boku no ongaku na n da |
There are 80 words left in this song3 |
Kono uta ha ato hachi-juu ji |
| After all, the value of a life is surely in the way it ends | Jinsei no kachi ha, owarikata darou kara |
It's you, it's only you that I can picture |
Tada, tada kimi dake wo egake |
| As the indigo blurs everything I see | Shikai no ai mo nijinda mama |
| In the distant sky I see above, a flower swims | Tooku aoida sora ni hana oyogu |
| My eyes are covered by indigo squared | Kono me oou ai nijou |
It's you, only you |
Tada, tada |
| In the distant sky I see above, you enjoy the cool of the night | Tooku aoida sora, kimi ga suzumu |
| As if you're just swimming through it | Tada yoru wo oyogu you ni |

Show/hide footnotes
1 藍 (ai; indigo) is a homophone for both 愛 (ai; love) and 哀 (ai; sorrow). The latter, at least, is likely an intended reading, given that this song's partner song on the album Elma is titled "Grief to the Power of One". See also the use of the phrase "AI-no-nijou", "i^2", later in this album. The semi-official English title for this song, taken from the music video on Youtube, is "Deep Indigo".
2 Pronounced "yasumi", like 休み "respite" or "break", but written 夜隅, an invented word that literally means "night-corner". 薄い休み would also not be particularly parseable, but could maybe mean "infrequent rest".
3 The wordcount of the remaining lines in this song in the original Japanese totals 80 characters, including punctuation. The wordcount in the final lines of this translation, including the line itself, is 80 words total.
